BWAP STATEMENT PRESENTATION:
Saving Lives; Bringing Hope and Providing Medical Care:
My fellow Guyanese, I ask you to place your hand over your heart. Do you feel that? A heartbeat is representative of life. For me, every life matters, and I am sure you feel the same way. The story I am about to tell you is one of the stories that has touched my heart and changed my world forever. This is the story of a little girl by the name of Zeniha Loo, who was only six years old when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since none of the hospitals in Guyana were equipped to perform surgeries of this nature, her mother reached out for medical and financial help through every possible channel. SHEA (operating unofficially at the time) also reached out to several hospitals and organizations seeking assistance on Zeniha’s behalf and a few hospitals offered treatment at full cost, ranging from $4,000,000.00 to $30,000,000.00 GYD. For the next thirty days, Zeniha’s family and SHEA pleaded with the public for assistance to save her life. Despite the many challenges, her parents took her to a hospital in Trinidad for treatment, having faith that the funds needed would be realized. But because of the lapse in time that it took to gather enough funds to make the trip to Trinidad, Zeniha’s health deteriorated and she passed away on February 15, 2012. This case proves the importance of having funds readily available so that precious time is not lost and we can get patients the care they need. According to the World Health Organization website, the average annual salary of a family in Guyana is approximately $1,243,000.00 GYD. According to www.costhelperhealth.com, the treatment cost for brain tumors can range from $200,000.00 GYD to $1,450,000.00 GYD. This disparity highlights the reason for my Beauty with a Purpose platform.
I . Partnering with SHEA:
The reason why I chose to align my Beauty with a Purpose with Saving Hands Emergency Aid, Inc. (SHEA) is because of stories like Zeniha’s. I believe that we can make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged. Together we can help those who are financially powerless when it comes to medical care. SHEA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization aimed at providing financial medical assistance coupled with pro-bono or subsidized medical treatment for families in need. As one of the Regional Director for SHEA, I assist with finding medical treatment services, raising funds, and meeting with patients and families to assess their needs and provide moral support. I entered the Miss World Guyana competition fully confident that I can and I will represent my beloved country in the same manner that I have represented SHEA. As John Bunyan once said and I quote “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.”
II. Fundraising:
As I embark on my journey to represent Guyana on this world stage, I would like to sincerely ask for your support towards my aspirations as I compete for this title. Experience this joy with me as those words of John Bunyan resonate within our hearts I look forward to a future of learning, growing, and serving humanity. Through the selfless act of giving, we can save many lives and prevent tremendous suffering. My goal is to raise approximately $2,000,000.00 GYD to help those in need. So far I have raised approximately $455,000.00 GYD from friends, families and supporters through my online crowd-funding campaign. I’ve also participated in an online garage sale by partnering with BegBarterBuySell.com to sell some of my used items that I no longer use. In addition, I conducted a bake sale in my neighborhood where I sold baked goodies and hosted a small charity dinner and a mini telethon by personally calling businesses, friends, families and supporters to make a substantial donation for this cause.
III. Awareness:
This is by no means enough to support all the medical needs in our country now and in the future and this is why I have pledged to give my continued support towards this cause. As I continue to work hand in hand with SHEA and as an Ambassador for Region One Barima Waini, my goal is to become the next Miss World Guyana and bring awareness to a cause that has proven itself many times over; a cause that saves lives. I am very humbled and grateful to be a part of this competition. As the new Miss World Guyana, I will promote visibility and knowledge about medically desperate situations on a greater scale and will propel the cause for which SHEA and I represent. I am therefore privileged and honored to be a finalist of the Miss World Guyana 2016 competition and sincerely hope that my endeavors to help others will be successful, that my hard work will be beneficial in the lives of others, and that someday I will leave behind a legacy of service which will inspire the younger generation to care for those less fortunate.
